On June 4, 2019, the Denton City Council passed a resolution to support the Original Denton District application to the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) Cultural District Program.

The application was formally submitted to the TCA on June 12 for consideration. On Sept. 5, 2019, the TCA announced the Original Denton District was one of three newly designated districts.
